How many people do significant research into a house before they buy it? A car? Investments? And how many people just get what their friends got?
Studied ignorance is the rule, rather than the exception – mind-boggling as that is to me (again, INTJ here). It comes from a propensity to live in the present rather than the future. A man who lives in the present is confident, because he doesn’t think about what could go wrong – he only thinks about what he wants in the now. A man who lives in the future can’t be confident unless he has made contingency plans and has a certain baseline knowledge or expertise.

Yes. It wasn’t Hugh Grant’s thing either, in Love Actually. But he ain’t even Hugh Grant.
I think your psychological profiling is pretty good, incidentally. Here’s another anecdote, supposedly true, you can analyze:
A few days after she broke it off, he got in his truck and drove the 60 miles to her restaurant. It’s a big hangout on a resort lake for the retired set. Since it was ‘over’ he didn’t mind anyone seeing them in the same place. He ordered coffee at the counter from a waitress. Then his girl comes out, speechless. He says her face alternated between unadulterated (heh) panic and blooming joy. She handed him his coffee, he says the room is staring at him, so the village gossip must have been redlining already. He took the coffee, took a step back, turned the cup over and poured it out on the floor, then turned and left without speaking. She tried to get in his truck with him, clutching at his arm.
