How do we define success in life? If we define it as snagging a hot babe, then the successful man is the confident man who can snag her. Such a woman will be attracted to confidence.
If we define success as being popular, popularity is related to confidence.
If we define it as having a good job – employers are attracted to confidence (and competence too, but confidence is much easier to demonstrate, and is often taken for a heuristic for competence). Thus, the confident man is more likely to get hired.
The confident man is more likely to take risks – risks that might result in spectacular financial success.
Your post, IMHO, confuses objective and subjective contexts. I agree with you that in objective contexts (ie. where physics dictate outcome), confidence is irrelevant and preparation will lead to success. But in subjective, interpersonal relationships, confidence makes its own luck – and the people I’ve described are often happy enough in their lives.
