“A man who lives in the present is confident, because he doesn’t think about what could go wrong – he only thinks about what he wants in the now. A man who lives in the future can’t be confident unless he has made contingency plans and has a certain baseline knowledge or expertise.”
A man who “lives in the present” is one unplanned outcome away from catastrophe. And I wouldn’t call it “confidence” as much as the bliss of ignorance. Further I have a very difficult time respecting and/or trusting men that have this mindset. Truth be told, although I expect that general outlook from women, I don’t particularly like it from them any better. I’m pleased that at least when it comes to planning (financial, vacation, home project, etc.) my wife is capable of putting real thought into future state. Where that falls to the wayside is anytime strong emotion gets involved. Very happy/very sad/very angry/etc and that future orientation of hers disappears. :-p
At that point “the future” isn’t important. Right then what’s important is how she “feels” in the moment, which I still struggle to view as relevant. And I don’t mean that in the sense that my wife’s feelings aren’t important. But that how she feels isn’t likely to change the planned outcome and/or the situation we prepared for in the first place. I don’t know how “in the present” folks ever have the resolve to push through difficulties in life. I guess head down, crawling up the mountain is how it gets done…
